If you're putting in a new heating system and you don't have ductwork, you have several different options. Two of the main choices are electric baseboard heaters and ductless heaters. There are a few similarities between these systems, but here are four reasons you may want to choose ductless heating over electric baseboard heaters.
1. You Want to Integrate Cooling
With a ductless heating system, you can also integrate cooling with your heater. Essentially, you get an outdoor unit which attaches to a number of indoor air handling units. To cool your home, the system absorbs the heat in your home into the refrigerant. Then, the refrigerant pumps through the system, and ultimately, it releases the heat outside and when the refrigerant cools back down, air blows over it and that cool air keeps your home cool.
When you need to use the heating part of your system, the process works in reverse. Rather than having a traditional heater, your system features a heat pump.
2. You Want to Minimise Inefficiencies
Even if you just want heating, you will enjoy how ductless systems tend to be more efficient than electric baseboard heaters. Typically, baseboard heaters need to be installed under windows. Then, the heat from the radiators rises and combats any cold air seeping through the window. Unfortunately, if the radiators are installed incorrectly, you may lose warmth and sacrifice efficiency.
With ductless systems, the holes that you need to put in the wall to run the tubing from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit, are very small. As a result, you don't have to worry about losing hot air.
3. You Want Design Flexibility
With baseboard heaters, you have one basic design option. In contrast, with a ductless system, you can choose from a variety of designs for your indoor air handling units. You can choose colours and shapes that complement your home decor.
4. You Don't Want Radiators Along Your Floor
In some situations, you may not want radiators along your floor. For instance, if you have children or pets in your home, you may not want them to touch hot radiators near the floor. Luckily, you don't have to worry about that with a ductless heating system. Usually, these systems feature air handling units that go near the top of the wall or on the ceiling.
